Moving up to Sixth Form

The transition from Senior School into Sixth Form is an exciting time for pupils as they begin to make decisions regarding their post-16 academic pathway and future careers.

Maximising academic performance right from the start of the two years

Our Sixth Form curriculum enables students to develop greater levels of independence and autonomy by introducing an even wider element of choice and self-direction into the structure and content of their study programmes.

With 28 options available, including A levels and a carefully selected range of BTECs, students have a diverse selection to choose from. Subject packages can be tailored to suit students’ aptitudes and to help them prepare for university, apprenticeship, further training or the workplace.

Students can also choose to complete one of a range of enrichment qualifications. In some cases, taking a fourth A level may be an appropriate option. The breadth of these opportunities helps students to develop key skills, both as learners and as individuals ready to enter the workplace.

Through a carefully balanced combination of challenge and support, we encourage our students to refine their individual areas of interest, to identify clear goals, and to develop aspirations related to their chosen areas of specialism.

The academic challenge posed by Sixth Form study is a significant step up, requiring a more advanced set of skills than those required at GCSE level. At Pocklington, our students benefit from a supportive network of teachers and peers in a familiar setting, as well as excellent facilities, that enable them to adjust more easily to the rigours of advanced study and Sixth Form life.

During the autumn term of Year 11, we encourage pupils to begin thinking more closely about their post-16 and post-18 study options via a series of planned events and strategies, including:

  •  Sixth Form Information Evening: An opportunity for pupils and parents to meet with subject teachers to find out more about specific A level, BTEC, and enrichment subject choices. This is particularly useful for pupils who are considering new subjects they will not have studied previously.
  •  Sixth Form Taster Day: Pupils can attend several A level and BTEC subject lessons to not only sample the subject content but also the style of teaching and study skills required, which may differ from what they experienced at GCSE level.
  •  Individual meetings with our career and university adviser, which are offered to all Year 11 pupils, cover Sixth Form subject choices, careers ideas and options post-16 and post-18. These sessions help pupils identify their areas of interest and the path to achieving their career goals.
  • Pupils can attend various events and activities that present a range of options. Representatives from UK and international universities, colleges, employers, and the National Apprentice Service are typically present.
  • Assistance is available on, and following, GCSE results day, if pupils are undecided about their Sixth Form subject choices.
  • Finally, once they complete their GCSE examinations, pupils can access an online package of Sixth Form transition materials that include general and subject-specific resources. This package outlines study methods and skills that are likely to bring pupils the greatest level of success, ensuring that they are fully equipped to handle the academic demands of Sixth Form.
